Nikolai Medtner had German roots, German was even spoken in his parental home, so it is not surprising that Medtner was an admirer of German culture. Composers like Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms were examples. Add to this the poems of Goethe and Heine and you have an ideal recipe for beautiful music.
Poignant songs on eternal themes, simple and timeless, written between 1904 and 1909. They anticipate the longing of the many Russian migrants leaving their country after the 1917 revolution, including Medtner himself. A longing for where you are not, for the one you are not.
